Left: Note I left for Dick one day when I went out to teach. He wasn't back from work yet and I knew I wouldn't return until after he'd gone to bed. I mean really, I can't wake him up just for this, can I? And I couldn't leave the house without warning him?! (Pentel Pocket Brush Pen on yellow legal pad.) Click on the image to view an enlargement.
Today's image and caption pretty much say it all.
I'd like to think I'm not afraid of much, but spiders do put me off.
Note: Dick reported that the spider ended up intact at the bottom of the washer—discovered when he pulled the clothing out. He didn't think it was that large—as large as I'd drawn it, actual size of course—but then I explained that the jostling of the clothes probably "deflated" it. We agreed to disagree.
UPDATE: Suggestions on what this spider might have been led me to do an internet search for MN spiders. That wasn't helpful but I ended up at insectidentification.org. There I found the Long-legged Sac Spider. What I saw was bigger than the .35 inch top of range listed. But it has the same coloring of the spider I saw. (How can I be so sure of the size? Well I'm a visual person and it was sitting right next to a button in the wash, and I can measure that button…) This would be a good bet because of its location too—our unfinished basement laundry room near an appliance. I don't like that it's an ambush predator! Painful bite, slow to heal. It just gets worse and worse. But what I saw was bigger. I'll have to keep looking. But it is the right color.
