Left: Another mixed media dog sketch on Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Paper. (Same materials as I used in Wednesday's image—but I allowed for some drying time and reworking. A 20 minute sketch.) Click on the image to view an enlargement.
So why aren't you at the Fair Sketching??
Meanwhile, here's another dog portrait to get you in the mood for animal sketching at the Fair—because of course you will.
I like that I can still see some of the Aquash light black ink brush pen lines underneath some of the paint. But I also like that I gobbed on (a techincal term) the paint in other areas. The stuff that looks like dry brush on the body of the dog is actually rubbed with my finger. It's just quicker.
This was a black and copper dog. I didn't bother to put out clean white gouache while I was working, so the lighter bits on the face are pretty dull. The eye highlights are reserved—paper color.
Now get over to the Fair.
You can find a schedule of animal judging here, so you know when to either see the judging or when to visit the animals in their pens.
The Pigeons will be at the Fair the first 4 days of the Fair (Thursday, August 22 to Sunday, August 25 [barns close early on Sunday for animal change over and cleaning]).
I thought you would want to know.
