What a wonderful helpful discussion of white! I admit to not being very systematic. Well, not systematic at all. And when I am, I don't remember what I did. But now I have a sketchbook where I actually note what I'm doing. It's a new practice for me and turns out, helpful! Thanks so much and here's to your future book!

Roz Stendahl

LizzieBo, thanks, I'm glad you found this helpful. I think being a little systematic is a great thing because that opens up so many more possibilities for being successfully outrageously spontaneous. Have fun with your experiments!

Miss T

Roz, GREAT information, thank you! I currently have M. Graham zinc white on my gouache palette, but I've put titanium on the shopping list so that I can play with both.

Miss T

P.S. Forgot to say that I am completely smitten with your rock paintings!

Roz Stendahl

Miss T, sometime you'll have to cover over and see the ones that I've kept. I still have my first set of 9 in this series (I painted other rock paintings before but started to do them floating when I was teaching botanical drawing and wanted to make a point to my students about composition. (You can see that group in a photo at a show here http://www.rozworks.com/art0709.html). While many others have gone off to good homes I also have another wall with several framed singly. You really have to see them in person to see the details as many are very dark. I'm starting one tomorrow as a reward for getting through the portrait party!

Cathy Inzer

A book! I hope you are writing a book on gouache! Do you have any suggestions for books on sketching? I love your drawings on people and animals.

Roz Stendahl

Cathy, don't get too excited, LizzieBo has been after me for a year now to drop everything and write a book. I do hope to do something about that. I have a lot of books I'd like to do. Maybe one on gouache. We'll see.

I was going to say that yes I have a book list of sketching and drawing books but I see I haven't finalized it and posted it yet. So I will get that taken care of in the next few weeks. (I had a lot of books I was looking at before the holiday season in hopes of writing a book review on them but I didn't get it finished.

Look for the drawing book list in the pages list when it comes out.

In the mean time I would have to say that my all time favorite drawing book is Betty Edwards', "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." But there are some others that are great as well and I'll list them.

Thank you for your kind words about my people and animal sketches. Tonight I drew two people in 6 minutes a piece at the portrait party with a smashed hand (I've had 6 days recovery). I made one woman who is my age look 19 (can't really complain about that) and I made a 20-something friend look 35). SIGH. But I had great fun doing it. And would do it all over tomorrow if I could.

bilby06

Hi,
Great post and the pigment web site is a great resource. Have you ever noticed that the w's in the font you used for that post are lighter than the rest of the letters? Maybe it's just me.

Roz Stendahl

Thanks, Bilby. Nope I try not to look at the fonts used on the blog too much because there isn't much choice and it isn't what I would do as a designer (i.e., have control). If you're talking about "w" in this post I don't see it, but that isn't to say there isn't some difference. If there were though, I'd be powerless to change it. Another reason I don't like the web vs. print.

Karen

I like that they're heart-shaped.

Roz Stendahl

Karen, funny you should mention this. I know you collect heart shaped rocks. I don't like heart shaped things and yet often when I finish painting a rock only then does it occur to me that it's heart shaped! What I think is funny today is that I didn't notice both of the rocks I selected to show for surfaces were heart shaped! I still have the first painting, the other one is now with someone else. I wonder if they noticed it was hearth shaped.

Hmmm.

Kevin

Wow, I've been trying hard to find blogs which wouldn't be very pretentious about watercolor and art and painting and I've found it right here. You really know what you're doing! The rocks are unbelievably tangible.

Roz Stendahl

Thanks Kevin, I'm glad that you like the blog and enjoy the rock paintings. I really enjoy painting rocks so I'm doubly glad you liked them. Thanks for your kind words.
