TV shows are coming and going and going on hiatus and then returning at odd (to me) times. Often I don't know when to catch something. But IFC has been promoting a new season of "Portlandia" to start on January 6, 2012 at 6 p.m. (eastern time). A block of shows will be running through 9:30 p.m. So if you don't know what it's like to live in Portlandia that would be a good time to check it out.
I don't really know how to describe "Portlandia" on IFC. I keep coming back to the thought that it is deliciously subversive: a reminder that we should all look at ourselves closely. But it's way more fun than that.
You can also see videos of some of the skits at various places on the internet. Margaret Talbot has written a great article on Carrie Brownstein, called Stumptown Girl in the January 2, 2012 New Yorker Magazine. Fred Armisen who created the show with Carrie and joins her on screen is also featured in the article. Talbot has put together a selection of video links that will introduce you to the characters. If you haven't seen the show before I recommend that you go and follow Talbot's lead.
I stumbled upon "Portlandia" in 2011 while channel flipping. I didn't know that Armisen and Brownstein did short video clips with some of the same characters before the show started. Talbot pointed me towards Thunderant where you can watch these as well. I'm very partial to "Film Club Ep.1." And Katchenza really is brilliant.
