This is just wonderful, Roz! Thank you for this post to show us Diane's work. It's so beautiful. Good going, Diane! I think oils are the medium for you.

Jon Harl

Wow! this is a great profile of Diane. Thanks

Mark Granlund

Wow, nice work Diane and great interview/article Roz. Diane, it is very exciting to see your change. The work, as always, is wonderful. See you soon.

Roz

They are more wonderful in person Karen. Wait til you see them!

Roz

Thanks Jon, I actually have to pinch myself some days because I get to go painting with her! And when we go on roadtrips I always get to see where we've been through her eyes because she draws when I drive!

Carol C.

I have become a Diane Wesman fan through your blog! This is a very exciting article! I'm thrilled to see the evolution, sort of, of an artist....

Roberta

I just love travel journals because they are like diaries with pictures...lol
When I first read your note about Diane traveling with "rubber stamps"...I thought she was drawing a photo of the ink pads "leaking" onto their pillows...cause we always travel with our bed pillows. Beautiful...thanks for sharing, Roberta

Roz

Carol, she keeps working and working! It's great fun to see what happens.

Roz

Roberta, so glad you enjoyed the peek into Diane's travel journal, and worked out the bit about rubberstamps—she takes them with her on her trip because she likes to stamp headings sometimes.

Diane Wesman

Here is a test to see if the cyberspace gods will allow me to add a comment. So far today they won't let me chime in on this generous post.

Diane Wesman

Thanks for all the encouragement, Roz. You're right, I'm having great fun figuring out how to use the oils. To get me closer to the palette I use for pastels, I went to Wet Paint and bought five new (for me) tubes of organic pigment colors. Because of the tinting strength (yes, the dreaded phthalo appears on two tubes)I'm going to have to be CAREFUL. But, what the heck, I'm trying to consider life an experiment not a test.

And, I can't say enough good things about the beautiful journal you gave me. As you noted, perfect paper. For those who have not seen it, the cover is red fabric and orange/red original Roz-decorated paper with stitching suggestive of tire tracks on the spine. Perfect for a Fall road trip. I will post some photos of it on my blog. Thanks, Roz.

This post on Diane and her work is just beautiful, Roz! I enjoyed seeing how she was journaling on her Utah trip, and to see all her oils. They are so lovely, and they just keep getting better and better!

June

Roz

Diane, as long as you hold back on the Phthalo blue and don't go the way of those horrible painting we saw on Friday I will be OK. But if you venture in that direction I will kick up a fuss and probably organize an intervention!

Roz

June, they do get better and better don't they? I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with the colors of winter, and the shadows.

Diane Wesman

Actually nightmare-type visions of those dreadful paintings we saw Thursday appeared when I looked at the new tubes of paint this morning. I will proceed with caution. Instead of trying them out today, I just worked with my usual colors and decided I needed a plan before I started with the potent pigments. But, hey, don't you think a little phthalo might help capture the colors you see looking through the waves on Lake Superior? Next time it rains and I'm stuck inside I'm going to do some experiments to see what these pigments do. Any paintings that look like the ones we saw will go into the trash!

Roz

Diane, since you actually know how to neutralize a color and stop it from being garish (unless that is needed in a small bit) I'm not really that worried about you with the new Phthalo blue. You'll discover some interesting mixes—but I'll be watching! Vigilant. (I don't know what that painter was thinking! Who would paint paintings like that? Only someone who grew up with poorly printed and very faded greeting cards perhaps? Aping what they think is "right"? I get ill just thinking about it.)

Nancy Patterson

Awesome journal pages and paintings! Lucky Dianne for getting a chance to learn from Marc. He has been a contributor to the Plein Air forum over at Wet Canvas. Search for his listings..I think his name is paintbox.

A class from him and one from you Roz...would be an ultimate art week for sure!!!!

Thank you for posting...and your friend Dianne has those oils DOWN PAT!! Gorgeous plein airs...love the different sizes too!

Cal Roetzel

What a marvelous encounter with landscape. Thanks Roz and Diane. I wonder what Europe would become in her eyes. cal

Roz

Cal, Hi! You guys need to plan a trip to Europe so we can all find out!
